wireless traffic controller system to save energy

The Wireless Traffic Control System (WTCS) is a demand actuated road traffic signal controller that controls the signal lamps over wireless medium. The usual practice of digging the road for cable laying is not required in the case of WTCS installation as there is no physical connectivity between the controller equipment (master) and the signal lamps. The WTCS is Area Traffic Control System (ATCS) compatible having features to perform at isolated intersections or as part of a synchronized chain of controllers.

The usual way of controlling the signal lamps at a road intersection is by connecting a copper cable between the traffic controller equipment and the signal heads. This cost a huge amount of money and manpower. Also, this causes damage to the road surface and difficulties to the public due to the digging of the road. Maintenance of traffic signals also is a matter of concern as the percentage of cable fault is very high on the road due to various reasons. The wireless traffic signal controller will avoid the digging of roads and ensure ease of installation.

The WTCS is a vehicle actuated, solar powered traffic signal controller with scalability from isolated traffic signal controller to fully Adaptive Area Traffic Control System. The WTCS will use standard communication protocols, wireless connectivity between the main controller and signal heads, GPS and GPRS interfaces, and CAN-bus interface for communication redundancy.

The WTCS will be developed by C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram and field trialed at one of the major cities in India (Trivandrum / Pune / Jaipur / Chennai / Mumbai).
